Avian Botulism at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Along the shores of Lake Michigan, birds at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are falling ill and dying as a result of avian botulism. Jarod Clark and his classmates at Royal Oak High School in Royal Oak, Michigan, produced this video on how researchers and volunteers at the park are searching for the toxin’s origins and new ways to prevent birds from consuming it.

Produced by Jarod Clark, Dalton Cymbal, Antonio Leija, Becca Messner, Grace Novak and Mary Sier, students at Royal Oak High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. Instruction provided by SRL Connected Educator Mike Conrad. Station support provided by Detroit Public Television (DPTV).

Special thanks to the Sleepy Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for the opportunity to explore the natural, cultural and educational resources being preserved for visitors from around the country and world by the park and its rangers.
