Legacy Early College profile of Columbine survivor airs on the NewsHour

To mark the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado, SRL reporters at Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina produced a profile of their physical education teacher, Lindsey O’Donnell, who survived one of the first big school shootings at age 17.

At the time, O’Donnell relied on friends and family to cope with the sadness and fear. Later, she discovered fitness and mindfulness, which helped her deal with the anxiety that led some of her fellow survivors to drugs and alcohol. The beloved teacher now leads daily mindfulness sessions to help students handle strong emotions and prepare for stressful situations.

Watch it now on NewsHour.

The piece was produced by Kimberly Castro and Jayden Williams at Legacy Early College. Instruction  provided by SRL Connected Educator Neena Kumar. Edited by Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich of Student Reporting Labs.
