Luis Maldonado is a Digital Media Instructor at Middle Creek High School in Apex, NC.  He has been teaching in Wake County’s Career and Technical Education Department since 2002. Mr. Maldonado is North Carolina’s first Digital Media teacher, writing the first draft of the course blueprint back in 2003. He has been involved in the development of the Digital Media curriculum since that time. He helped create the first high school play-by-play sports podcast in the state. The program called, The Sports Block, is completely student-run and is available live via the internet. Mr. Maldonado is also an advisor for Middle Creek’s SkillsUSA chapter and has been for the past ten years. During that time his students have not only been competing at SkillsUSA’s State Leadership and Skills Conference in Greensboro, but they have been producing the opening and closing ceremonies for the conference.  In 2018, Middle Creek joined PBS SRL. His students enjoy working with their local PBS station to produce student engaged news stories that help make a difference in the community. An advocate for Career and Technical Education, Mr. Maldonado, has served on the State Superintendent’s Career-Ready Commission, helping students prepare for college and careers after high school. A graduate of East Carolina University, Luis worked for WNCT-TV 9, a CBS affiliate, in Greenville, NC before moving to teach in Wake County. Mr. Maldonado believes Career and Technical Education prepares students for a future that hasn’t been invented yet.
