Meet 2024’s 20 up-and-coming storytellers under 20

Each year, PBS News Student Reporting Labs shines a spotlight on the next generation of storytellers in our network who are shaping the future of journalism and media. This year’s list is no different. We’re celebrating extraordinary young voices whose work stands out for its originality, impact, and dedication to telling stories that matter. From stories on gun violence to this year’s contentious elections, these up-and-coming storytellers are redefining how stories are told and shared. 

Join us in honoring these talented students who are using their skills, passion, and vision to inform, engage, and inspire in their communities and beyond.

Meet the 20:

Adelaida Siaca, 17

Adelaida Siaca is a 12th-grade student from San Juan, Puerto Rico. She produced a powerful story about voters in Puerto Rico for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast.

Bree Campbell, 18

Bree Campbell is a college freshman at IE University in Madrid, Spain. She was a host for season four of On Our Minds. Bree helped tell stories about success, masculinity, music, climate, and mental health. She also talked to Lawrence the Band about how making music is therapeutic.

Grace Go, 18

Grace Go is a student at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York currently taking a gap year. She was a special correspondent for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast and produced an audio story about her family’s struggles to achieve the American Dream.

James Kim, 18

James Kim is pursuing his first year of college at Yale University. In early 2024, he hosted season four of On Our Minds where he helped tell stories about success, masculinity, music, climate, and mental health. He also got to talk to the U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.

Jayden Joseph, 17

Jayden Joseph is a senior at Oakland Military Institute in Oakland, California. In 2024, he was a student producer for a segment of SRL’s documentary Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun about how gun violence can drastically alter the lives of people who just happen to be nearby.

Jenny Marquez, 16

Jenny Marquez is a junior at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School in Lake Balboa, California. She was a 2024 Summer Academy fellow. She also attended the Teen Vogue Summit in Los Angeles and interviewed author Jenny Han.

Joe Book, 17

Joe Book is a junior at DC International School. He was a student producer for a segment of SRL’s documentary Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun where he helped film and edit a story about Kanihya Glover, a gun violence activist in Washington, DC.

Jordan Fabirkiewicz, 18

Jordan Fabirkiewicz is a college freshman in Iowa. She was a behind-the-scenes correspondent at the 2024 Summer Academy. She was also a fellow for SRL’s first-ever Winter Academy in Austin, Texas.

Khadeejah Khan, 18

Khadeejah Khan is a freshman at the University of California, Davis. She was a special correspondent for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast and produced a story about college students protesting the Israel-Hamas War. She also conducted special interviews for SRL including a conversation with Teen Vogue election correspondent Sarah Akaaboune. 

Macayla Ramsey, 17

Macayla Ramsey is a senior at Cass Technical High School in Michigan. She contributed to the 2024 PBS News Hour piece “Troubled rollout of FAFSA overhaul causes major delays for students seeking financial aid.” She is also a member of the 2024-2025 Student Advisory Team.

Maggie Lebeau, 18

Maggie Lebeau is a freshman at the University of Missouri where she is working towards a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She was a behind-the-scenes correspondent at the 2024 Summer Academy and produced a story for On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast about young, rural conservative voters in Illinois.

Miranda Jatib, 18

Miranda Jatib is a high school senior in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She produced a powerful story about voters in Puerto Rico for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast.

Natalie Erzal, 18

Natalie Erzal is a senior at Rouse High School in Leander, Texas. She produced a story for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast about how the idea of America has changed for young people. She also attended SXSW EDU where she was a part of a team of student reporters who covered the event.

Nico Fischer, 16

Nico Fischer is a junior at Santa Clara High School in San Jose, California. He is a host of SRL’s On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast and a member of our Student Advisory Team.

Olivia Brandeis, 18

Olivia Brandeis is a senior at Monte Vista High School from Danville, California. She was a Winter Academy fellow and talked to Wyatt Gable, a young conservative running for local office in North Carolina, for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast.

Oswaldo Nunez, 18

Oswaldo Nunez is a student at Oakland Military Institute. In 2024, he was a student producer for a segment of SRL’s documentary Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun about how gun violence can drastically alter the lives of people who just happen to be nearby.

Reesa Venterea, 18

Reesa Venterea is in her first year at Columbia University in New York City. She is a researcher and fact-checker for the On Our Minds: Election 2024 podcast. Reesa was also a member of the 2023-24 Student Advisory Team.

Shawn McCarthy, 19

Shawn McCarthy is a freshman at La Salle University in Philadelphia. He was a student producer for a segment of SRL’s documentary Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun about a student who grew up in a neighborhood riddled with gun violence. He is also active with WHYY as an intern.

Simran Gupta, 17

Simran Gupta is a senior at Alliance Academy for Innovation in Cumming, Georgia. She was a researcher, fact-checker, and blog writer for Season 4 of the award-winning podcast On Our Minds. She also was a special correspondent for On Our Minds: Election 2024 and produced a story about how AI is affecting the election. She is a member of SRL’s Student Advisory Team. 

Sukey Hayden, 16

Sukey Hayden is a junior at DC International School. She was a student producer for a segment of SRL’s documentary Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun where she interviewed Kanihya Glover, a gun violence activist in Washington, DC.
