SRL reporters discover how youth can reach their potential

Earlier this school year, Managing Editor of Education Leah Clapman and Student Reporting Labs Director Thaisi Da Silva represented SRL at the National Educational Telecommunications Association conference in Tampa, Florida.

A highlight of the annual conference was a student-led interview with Jamie Merisotis, the president and CEO of the Lumina Foundation.

SRL correspondents Jazmin Cunningham, a sixth-grader from the Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg, and Chloe Golan, a junior from Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School, traveled to Tampa along with their respective teachers Laura Manke and Victor Fernandez to conduct the interview.

Together, Chloe and Jazmin facilitated a conversation about education in the 21st century and what it means to help young people reach their potential.

The interview included questions sourced from students around the country including Milani Cruz from Pflugerville High School in Texas, Joshua Cui from Maui Waena Intermediate School in Hawaii and Isa Bynum from Suitland High School in Maryland.

Watch a segment of the interview to find out what Merisotis believes is the role both education and public media play in creating new talent.
