One DACA recipient’s journey to higher education

As poverty and violence worsened in Honduras, Darwin Murillo escaped the country with his older brother 16 years ago to join their mother in the United States. Now an undergraduate student at George Mason University in Virginia, Darwin has received DACA status and is working towards becoming an immigration attorney. SRL Homegrown Fellows interviewed Darwin and his mother, Yunia Rivera, on the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered in the United States.

The Student Reporting Labs Homegrown Fellowship gives students in the Washington D.C. Metro area an opportunity to develop journalism and video production skills and connect with other students who are passionate about storytelling. This year, we worked with six fellows to produce a broadcast story of their choice.

This story was produced by SRL Homegrown Fellows Dawn Belton, Morgan Fischer, Jamie Jeong, Alison Pataky, Jashaun Munson, and Keontria Wainwright with mentorship from SRL producers Rawan Elbaba, Briget Ganske, and Kristy Choi.
