SRL wins Telly Gold for Moments of Truth series

Arlington, VA – May 23, 2023 

PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs Moments of Truth series was named the Gold Telly Winner in Online – Series: Video Journalism in the 44th Annual Telly Awards, which honor excellence in video across all screens.  

Moments of Truth is a digital series exploring misinformation and showcasing intergenerational conversations about facts, information, and truth. It explores the ways young people are grappling with online misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories, cyberbullying and hate speech, and how communities can come together to support truth, quality news and information, and healthier online discourse. Moments of Truth was made possible with support from the Google News Initiative.

SRL also won silver and bronze Telly awards for its We the Young People: Moments of Truth 2022 midterm elections special.

“As the media and information landscapes become more and more complex, engaging with student journalists opens opportunities for news organizations to share the purpose and craft of reporting,” said Leah Clapman, Executive Director of Student Reporting Labs. ”These pieces were filmed with student cam-ops who get real-world experiences high-quality storytelling and public service. We’re so proud of the entire team that worked together to produce these compelling stories.”

Today’s Telly winners announcement caps a year-long celebration of creators and talent who stand out during a time when the ubiquity of screens brings more clutter than quality into our lives. 

“The caliber of the work this season coming from creators such as  PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs truly has reflected the theme of breaking out and standing out,” said Tellys Executive Director Sabrina Dridje. “Our industry is experimenting with new technologies like never before, crafting truly compelling stories to draw attention to some of the world’s most pressing issues, and companies big and small are turning to more sustainable practices to break the cycle of past production processes.”
